2. William1 Bass, born 29 March 1654, married Catherine Lanier who died 17 February 1691/2. He was called William Bass, Sr., on 13 October 1715 when he admitted in Norfolk County court that he owed John Hodgson 50 pounds of tobacco [Orders 1710-17, 169]. On 17 March 1726/7 he claimed to have cleared lands near the Dismal Swamp which "hath been used by his and Their forebears since & before English governance in Virginia." He received a certificate from the Norfolk County Clerk confirming his rightful possession of the land and further stating that
William Bass, Senr. & ... his sons Wm. Bass, Thomas Bass and Joseph Bass, & spinster daughter Mary Bass are persons of English and Nansemun Indian descent with no Admixture of negor, Ethipopic blood
He was called William Bass, Senr., and was living in Western Branch District of Norfolk County on 6 January 1729 when he purchased 103 acres in Norfolk County at the mouth of Deep Branch for 25 pounds [DB G:fol.35 (p.183)]. He was taxable with his son Thomas in the Western Branch District of Norfolk County in 1730, 1731 (called William Bass, Sr.), 1732 (with William Horse/Horsey in his household), and 1733-36 living near Richard and Eliza Price and William Price whose wife was taxable in 1736 [Wingo, Norfolk County Tithables, 1730-50, 20, 38, 73, 94, 138, 183]. He was probably in debt when he made his 1 October 1740 will since he left his land to his daughter Mary, "if she can Save it." The will, proved 17 September 1742 in Norfolk County, mentioned his children William, Edward, Joseph, Thomas, and Mary (executrix), and grandson William Bass [WB H:8]. The record of his death on 13 August 1741 is in the Bass family papers which also record that his son John and his daughter Keziah, Jr., predeceased him [Bell, Bass Families of the South, 12]. .

Notes for JOHN BASSE:
John Basse came as an infant with his mother and father to the New World of Virginia. Jamestown was founded in 1607, nine years
before John was born. According to genealogist, Alyene Prenn, the story related to her by Justin Bass, at the time Chief of the Nansemond Tribe, was that John was the only survivor at Basse's Choice of the Good Friday massacre in 1622. John's father, Nathaniel had returned to England as presumably had his mother since she died in England in 1630. John was rescued from the carnage by Nansemond Indians and was taken to raise by them. John married a Nansemond Indian girl with the Christianized name, of Elizabeth. Elizabeth's father's name was Robin the Elder. He was the "King", or Chief (Weroance) of the Nansemonds.

Nathaniel Basse was christened, December 29, 1589, at the Church of Saint Gabriel Church,
Fenchurch St., London, England. Nathaniel was commissioned to bring settlers to the New World.
On April 27, 1619, they arrived at Jamestowen, Virginia, founded in1607 (Isle Of Wight County,
1608-1907) with one hundred settlers in a ship commanded by Captain Evans.
They immediately settled near the mouth of a creek on the south side of the James River
still known as Lawne's Creek. Captain Nathaniel Basse and others undertook to establish
another plantation in the same neighborhood. This plantation was known as Basse's Choice
and was situated on the Pagan River. Nathaniel was back in England in early 1621/22 and
returned to Virginia in 1622. He was commissioned to seek colonists for Virginia in
New England and elsewhere.
The houses of Captain Basse's plantation were being built when a great calamity
happened to the infant colony. At midday on Good Friday, March 22, 1622 there were twelve
hundred fourty British inhabitants in the state of Virginia. Of these, three hundred forty
seven were killed by Indians in the eighty settlements on the north and south sides of the
James River, of which fifty three were residents of this county (Isle Of Wight County).
At the house of Nathaniel Basse, twins Humphrey and Samuel were slain. Nathaniel, who was in
England at the time, escaped.
A muster of the inhabitants of Virginia taken in 1625 includes Nathaniel Basse,
age 35. Nathaniel was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1624,1625, 1628 and
again in 1629. He was a Councillor in 1630.
Nathaniel Bass returned to England and is buried in Church of St. Alphage,
Cripplegate, London England, 3 July 1654.
